Umm Qais

  • Project Type: Asset Management, Heritage Structures
  • Client: Turquoise Mountain
  • Location: Jordan
  • Date: 2021

About this Project

In 2021, ECSL were commissioned to undertake the inspection, assessment, renovation and improvement works at Umm Qais in Jordan, where our client is Turquois Mountain on behalf of the Jordanian Ministry of Tourism. The majority of the structures at Umm Qais are the remains of a significant Roman-era city built around two basalt theatres. The city was abandoned around 70CE following a devastating earthquake, but was re-discovered and has been undergoing excavation and refurbishment since the 1950’s, with work now gaining pace to create a heritage tourist destination in the north of Jordan.

Roles and Responsibility

Upon completing the survey, we will be using our extensive asset management and heritage structures experience to design the repair and restoration works, enabling our client to bring the site back into regular use as originally intended.
