Whitby Cycle Path
- Project Type: Bridges & Structures
- Client: Sustrans
- Location: Whitby, UK
- Date: 2021
About this Project
The proposed Whitby Cycle Path would link the towns of Whitby and Staithes utilising the now redundant Whitby to Loftus line in North Yorkshire. Opened in 1883 and closed in the 1960’s, a number of the larger structures have since been removed but the project would require re-use of many remaining railway bridge structures along the route.

Roles and Responsibility
ECSL were responsible for walking the route to determine the condition of the remaining assets and assess the potential for re-use, including circa 20 bridges and 2No. Tunnels.
As well as structure condition, our engineers had to consider accessibility and safety constraints related to use of those structures.
Addtionally, where larger structures have been removed, ECSL provided preliminary designs for replacements to ensure continuity of the route.
